Our Group
We bring different perspectives to the table, but we’re united by a love for purposeful work, thoughtful design, and real connection.
I am a design-led researcher based in the Centre for Preventive Neurology at the Wolfson Institute of Population Health. Currently I am Senior Lecturer in Patient Public Involvement (PPI) and Public Engagement in Science (PES), and co-lead the Institutes Public Advisory Panel. I am also a member of the Design Societies Research Unit at Goldsmiths which combines and cultivates expertise in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and design to engage technoscientific and environmental matters of care and concern. This specifically looked at the patient experience of people with Multiple Sclerosis using STS and design-led research. I sit on a number of grant review panels.
Alison Thomson
Reader in Design at QMUL
I am a postdoctoral researcher working at the intersection of Design, Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), and Science and Technology Studies (STS). I use design-led methods to research sensitive, complex, and often contested experiences of care, with a particular focus on reproductive health.
At Queen Mary University of London, I contribute to the Pregnancy and Medicines project, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Here, I explore how people make sense of their experiences and decisions around medicines in pregnancy, using qualitative and practice-based methods to surface nuanced accounts of care, uncertainty, and responsibility.
Benedetta Lusi
Posgraduate Research Associate in Design at QMUL
I am a Lecturer in Social Science in the Centre for Primary Care. A social anthropologist by background, I undertake interdisciplinary projects in applied health research, adopting a wide range of participant-focused methods: ethnographic, narrative, surveys, visual approaches.
I joined QMUL in 2017 to take a lead role in collection, management, analysis and interpretation of data for the APOLLO-MM project. The Apollo project is an in-depth ethnographic case study of patients’ and healthcare professionals’ experiences and practices of polypharmacy to inform a safe, effective and person-centred approach to medicines use in primary care.
